I captured this image in 2001 while on a road trip through Northern Scotland, using a large format film camera.

This image was tricky to get; I had to hike through tic-infested bracken (ferns), while being followed by a swarm of midges. It felt as if I had hiked 10 kilometres, when in reality it was closer to 1…

Using a large format camera is a slow procedure. The camera setup, composition, metering, and exposing the film takes several minutes, and most of that time is spent under a dark cloth.

Sadly for me, I had a lot of company under that cloth, in the form of a swarm of midges trapped underneath. My face was a bloody mess, but I got the shot!

The light was perfect for this image with its soft light under dark, brooding skies.
